Mariee Sioux does it right! I really haven’t heard someone do psyche-folk in the contemporary as well as she does. Like Linda Perhacs and other early originators of the psyche-folk west coast sound it doesn’t sound like Sioux is trying too hard to produce the her complex sound of Native America and Subtle folk music.
On this note:
Thanks Harold for introducing me to Perhacs oh so long ago
I think these people were caring for the fawn for only a few weeks until it was old enough to live in a wildlife facility. But as I have said before concerning foxes it would be amazing if we as a civilization had more than just a few species as domesticated house hold pets. I understand that once this little one grows up it won’t be conducive to living in doors but one can dream that a toy deer can be breed.
I haven’t posted in a while because I have been away and here is what I return with:

As we approached the Temple Mount our tour guide said, “Don’t Take Pictures of Anyone Praying Folks – We Don’t Want Any Problems” – a statement that comes close to but barely touches the depths of the complicated and pragmatic politics in Israel and Palestine. particularly in Jerusalem where faiths, traditions and races seem to clash on almost ever conceivable level. My own presence as a tourist seemed anything but neutral and benign as I was led into policed Palestinian communities, Roman Catholic controlled holy sites, and land marks of Zionist pride (Masada). My participation in an economy connected to these places and even my ability to make these places/people/political agendas “visible” forced me into a unique mental space and thought process I haven’t experienced before.

Because of these complicated positions and politics I found the trip fascinating and I honestly didn’t think it would be as thought-provoking and intellectually productive as it was when I first accepted the invitation. I have more images from the trip here please take the time and have a look.
Sometimes I do want something a little more scorching hot for cold weather than the likes of Other Lives and also I wish I could be Patti Smith for even just a day.

So I know, American Apparel killed the concept of mens’ tights and uni-tards along with anything else that seemed like a nice simple idea. BUT I haven’t seen tights or uni-tards on a real man done the right way yet and with the resurgence of turn of the century American mens’ wear many beautiful kinds of “thermals” are appearing. Altough often in a queer context these can be toned down. These are from homo-neurotic -please try to ignore the Man buffet that is also being advertised in these shots. I feel peaking out under a lose pant and shirts or ripped jeans these would look beautiful in winter.

In a drunken ramble last night a few friends, Deb and I discussed the possible origins of the Keytar – apparently this is the first and it’s advertisement says it all.

Wild Russia is stellar discovery channel series that some how flew under my radar and wound up being played in large blocks on Animal Planet this month. The series is in six parts and covers Bio-regions across Russia’s expanse from the Caucuses to the Kamchatka peninsula where (pictured above and below) Sea eagles fight over salmon with Golden eagles – worth becoming glued to your media set-up for a few hours.

Oh Winter – I am ready for thee!

O.C. Marsh (Pictured here In the back surrounded by students and cavalry) was the first American Professer Of Anthropology, The director of Yale’s Peabody Museum and one of the biggest figures of paleontology ever. The image above is from the period from 1853-1878 (called the “Bone Wars”) where Marsh led expeditions, funded by his uncle Peabody and Yale, into the mid-west (during the height of the Indian Wars and subsequent genocide mind you) in an feverish attempt to find and name some of the most common of fossil species today. It’s strange how the turn of the century and just a hand full of figures was the crucible of the world we live in today.

Last night my friend Mikey invited me to see Elia Kazan’s East Of Eden. The film itself has strikingly radical moments for a Hollywood production from the 50’s – skewed camera angles, prostitution and decentralized family units becoming prominent elements of the film – things that would influence my film-maker progenitors the new wave. But besides all this in the film I am constantly struck by how amazing Dean was as an actor – his performance was masterful and on point. I have never thought James Dean was particularly attractive and always wondered what the excitement was all about…now I get it.

Thanks Lauren

Alexander McQueen and Nick Knight have created some of the most stunning imagery to come out of the fashion world in the past two-decades. Neither is shy about using technology when producing there images yet I haven’t seen something this strange in a long while. Apparently they have produced a fantasy art style publicity image for McQueen’s puma collection. Fantasy art aesthetics were big a couple years ago in fine art circles, but something has made me interested in the images again – and this image using photographed elements is pretty intriguing. I still love images like the cover art of Heavy Metal the movie below -

- or the work of Boris Vallejo from the 70’s and 80’s

The Last one is a 1987 Ford Taurus ad. This one in-particular illustrates what I like about these images – They are so over the top 15year old fantasy that they fall flat as a humorous jab at masculine imagery. At some point I would like an image of my friends and I created in this style.

In a neighboring town to where our upstate New York farm is located, is the store Kabinett and Kammer. An alter to natural history themed interior design K&K sells taxidermy animals, shells, medical charts, old furniture and endless other objects of curiosity. Here are a few images of there store from the site.

Interesting about this shop for me is that in marks a sea change for upstate NY. Originally the Hudson was where city people landed when moving north, but post 9/11 it seems western NY has opened up to the above culture. Sean Scherer, a painter, and his partner, former director of the Brooklyn Museum had set up residence in Andes, and then opened the store. My parents, part time residents of the area, never though the would see the day when this kind of thing made it’s way up to there neck of the woods.

I rarely mix my work and my pleasure (work being a serious matter and this blog being pleasure and not so serious). But I realized the two collapsed this past week when I was hired by Sharon Hayes to assist her in a project to find and remake various yard signs from history. The project I find intriguing – dealing with matters of collective memory the voice of history etc. topics that are close to my heart. One sign I remade was a fabric banner titled “Free Huey.” After making this I remembered how struck I was by Huey’s style and intelligence the first time i had seen footage of him. Here is the infamous image of him below, produced to make him a black power symbol.

In general the Panther uniform was the chicest revolutionary look in the sixties. Below is an image of Newton at a school – the magnitude of his handsomeness is so clear in this picture.

So the auction house of Julia D. James is having a “Spectacular October 2009 Firearms Auction-Auction: October 6 & 7, 2009: 10am-Preview: October 2-5, 2009: 9am-5pm.” The lot has some unbelievable fire arms but also these mid 19th century -mid 20th century odds and ends. The last image is of possibly the best item in the lot and it has a link to more views of it…This item is the American Helen of Troy – It will destroy men. via Curated

This is how a post is usually written…in the morning half asleep – gleaned from some traces of a dream.

I got my roper fringe boots re-soled the other day by my usual shoe repair person who is an ancient little Asian man who has a minuscule shop on Madison avenue between 36st and 35st. Even though he never quite asks how I want anything done he some how always does an outstanding job and gives me some very beautiful little designs on the soles he puts on. This time it was this Eagle brand and when he did my motorcycle boots he put a black rubber sole with an Indian chief logo on the bottom…dare I say he may be my…you know.
